Power of prayer is a very personal thing for the deities, or forces that we pray to are unique to the individual actually praying. Perhaps then, power of prayer has little to do with who we pray to and more to do with how we pray. There is no argument that power of prayer does work, if only to make the person praying feel better; that alone can be enough in these stressful times.
The next interesting idea regarding the power of prayer is the prayer being answered. There are definite accounts of miraculous events and healings associated with power of prayer, so something is responding to the prayer itself. We often hear about self-fulfilling prophecies, where someone is told something will happen and they then go out of their way to make those situations occur; is prayer a similar idea or is there a unifying force that does answer back?
The prayer itself is a vibrating frequency that extends beyond the person praying, the building they are in and proceeds to expand outwards, perhaps infinitely. We all know that when you strike a tuning fork and corresponding frequencies in the vicinity will respond back; almost like a call and answer. Therefore, the energy of the prayer vibrates out into the heavens and attracts similar frequencies corresponding to nature of the prayer. 
This is how the laws of attraction work; you vibrate outward that which you seek to manifest, either within you or around you; this is where the idea of ‘be careful what you wish for’ comes from, or ‘you shall reap what you sow’. The energy that you extend with your prayer will return to you in a suitable form; this is the power of prayer at its fullest.
Perhaps there is a deity waiting to answer our prayers or perhaps the answer is the Universe responding, in kind, to our prayer vibrations; either way, the power of prayer does work. We can also see this from a negative perspective; the more concentrated effort that you put into seeing your life in a negative way, the more the world will respond back to you your own ideas. This again is an example of the power of prayer, if you pray with enough effort you will be answered; so be careful!
The power of prayer comes from your heart and your passion. As you pray, you feel with every fiber of your being the essence of your prayer and this intense prayer though-form will be answered as the Universe responds back.
