Positive thinking is often seen as a way of burying your head in the sand and yet true positive thinking can in fact re-wire the way you think and can even change your life.
To use positive thinking in a healthy way you first need to address the issues that you are facing. For example, if you are dealing with a difficult person at work then merely thinking ‘happy’ thoughts will probably not help. It is important to address the situations in a realistic manner and then move onto positive thinking.
Often, the way that we react to any situation is the ultimate cause of our stress and discomfort. If we can stop, take a breath and then assess the situation in a more positive light then we may very well see aspects that would otherwise be clouded.
Another important point is that whatever you focus on internally, the larger that focus will become. If you are brooding over a small event, you can see that the event can become larger in your mind until you think you are in a full-blown crisis. Often, writing your thoughts down can shed real light on any situation. Make or list, or even better, draw a mind map and start writing down the worse that could happen. Then switch and draw a diagram representing the positive aspects of the situation and the good that could manifest.
We can thus see that positive thinking starts with a logical, almost emotionless mindset. This removes the initial emotion from the situation to allow logical thought to take a real look at possible future events. You can then deliberately focus on the positive aspect and as you focus, you will see that positive aspect grow and develop until you are now faced with a new and positive situation.
If you can blow things out of proportion in a negative way, you can certainly blow things out of proportion in a positive way. As long as you are clear and logical then you will start to see positive aspects in almost any situation. Imagine then, if you spent your life in this manner and started to look for the positive everywhere. It only takes twelve weeks for any new habit to form, so why not spend the next twelve weeks looking for the positive in your life.
Positive thinking can be a very powerful tool if used correctly. You can use it to start a new habit, change the way you approach any situation and ultimately you can use positive thinking to change the way you live and work.
