These days, games have become more and more complicated and yet playing some of the more traditional and simple games can be most rewarding. Playing these older board games can be very relaxing, entertaining and can provide players with wonderful memories.
Shut the Box is one such game that is very easy to learn and to play and yet can be wonderfully entertaining especially with many players. Shut the Box is essential a dice game full of luck; however, there is some simple strategy involved that makes Shut the Box wonderfully entertaining. There are varieties of the Shut the Box format but essentially, they are the same. You will have a playing area for the dice and numbered boxes or doors to shut according to the role of the dice.
The two dice are rolled by the players and the highest score goes first. Player 1 will roll their dice and using the combined total, they will shut different boxes. Let us say that player one rolled a five and a four. They could then shut box number nine or boxes numbered five and four. You can also shut the boxes numbered seven and two, as long as the total of the shut boxes is the same as the dice roll. This then contains as long as there are boxes to shut that will not take the combined totals over the combined roll of the dice. Obviously, the less boxes that are left open the harder it becomes to roll the right score to shut them.
The remaining boxes are therefore the target for the next player whose aim is to roll the right dice total to shut the box and win! If the open boxes have a value of six or under then the play will continue with a single die, otherwise the final boxes will never be shut.
Shut the Box sounds too simple to be fun, but it is a wonderful party game and can even be played as a form of solitaire when you are bored! The Shut the Box game comes in a variety of style and makes and some of the nicest ones have a beautiful green baize playing surface with nicely carved and varnished boxes. This adds to the visual appeal of the game as well as to the playing appeal.
So next time that there is nothing on the television or you want something different to do at the next dinner party, why not bring out Shut the Box and enjoy good old-fashioned family fun!
