Overcoming Chronic Stress

Chronic stress has now become a way of life for many people, yet this need not be the case. Chronic stress does not have to take over your work and family life and can be dealt with and ultimately eradicated; there is no law that says you should suffer stress.

Chronic stress can often take grip before any stressful event has occurred; this is especially true if you are expecting a stressful situation to happen. This expectancy can snowball from mild anxiety to full blown panic! Therefore, it is important that one take each moment at a time and deal with events as they happen and to move on after they are over.

We have all had the experience of lying awake at night, mulling over in our minds the events of the day. This will cause us to wake the next morning with all this tension there and the stress cycle to start before we even leave the house! This is where chronic stress develops as we become use to the stress and accept it as part of life.

Meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga and many other techniques can help dramatically. They do take time to become part of your daily life but once they become habitual then you will have tools to deal with chronic stress. Obviously, one can change jobs, move house and so on however; inevitably, there will be times when a potentially stressful situation will arise. It is at this moment that you can change the way you react.

Chronic stress is always a reaction to an event or situation; the stress itself is not an independent force, it is the result of how you deal with what is going on right now. This is where the practices highlighted above can really help. Simple techniques such as taking deep breaths as you feel the stress increase can really help. There is often the joke about going to one’s ‘happy place’, yet this is a very valid technique if you allow it to become habitual.

Chronic stress does not have to rule your life, even if you cannot change jobs or relocate, you can still learn powerful techniques to deal with the stress as it happens. This becomes a habit after just 12 weeks, so if you can put into practice any anti-stress technique from now then in just three months you will be dealing with stress effectively and automatically.
