Managing Acid Reflux Through Diet

One author’s experience with the alkaline diet and its effects on acid reflux.

I have suffered acid reflux for many years. After seeing the doctor I was given the usual medication and antacid prescriptions which I took and which, for a while, helped.

The problem with medication such as this is that the underlying issue, in other words the reason why one is experiencing acid reflux in the first place, is never addressed. In fact the extended use of antacid and other medications such as proton pump inhibitors is that one you stop taking them the acid reflux can come back more severely to overcompensate for the medication. Another problem is that sometimes not enough stomach acid can be the problem, which is why antacids won’t cure the situation.

After I stopped my medication my reflux came back with a vengeance. That is when I decided I needed to cure the situation and started to look at my diet. That is when the healing really started.

I switched over to an alkaline diet and within days I was a new person. I cut out all acid forming foods and went over to an alkaline diet. There are many charts available that list which foods are alkaline and which foods are acid. By sticking to the alkaline side my symptoms were gone within days and I no longer needed any medication.

One of the main ingredients in my recovery was the use of apple cider vinegar. Mixed with a little honey in a glass of water, I take this tonic every day. Apple cider vinegar leaves a very alkaline residue when inside the body and this is the key point. Lemons are a good example. They are very acidic and yet within the body they leave a highly alkaline residue. In fact lemon juice is one of the most alkaline substances you can use. Again, as a tonic, lemon juice, a little homey and water resolved my acid reflux.

So now I have no more acid reflux, my heartburn is completely gone and I never get any headaches. I have also stopped all medication.

I also used to suffer from severe fatigue during the afternoon; now on this new way if eating the fatigue ahs stopped as well. I have also shed some extra pounds!

I would highly recommend switching to an alkaline way of eating. It is not a diet – it is a whole new way of eating and it is one that works.
