How to Manage Debt

Let us first look at the nature of debt. Many people are ashamed when they get into debt and yet debt is an important part of business and a part of how we live. Debt is used to finance big projects, buy cars and houses and even banks borrow money! The problems arise when debt goes out of control through poor judgement or factors outside of our control.

One tackles debt by first being honest and sitting down and calculating to the penny exactly how much debt has been accumulated. This may be shocking at first, yet the shock is now over, a plan can be implemented and the worst is behind you. This first step is the step to financial security. It goes without saying that there is no point refinancing if it is costing you as much or more than what you are paying now.

Another, sometimes forgotten step, is talking to the creditors. Most will be willing to listen and can give you more reasonable payment plans. They also may be able to freeze or reduce interest rates on loans and credit cards. There are many financial charities that will help people in debt. This also includes businesses that have much business debt to pay off. This can be individual sole traders as well as larger companies.

Budgeting is a step in dealing with debt and simple steps can save you money. Here are a few examples of budgeting:

  • Take a pack lunch to work rather than buying one
  • Chose a small coffee at lunch rather than the large latte
  • Try to make take away meals at home and save a fortune!
  • Switch from contract to pay-as-you-go if you are not using allocated cell phone minutes
  • Visit charity shops for furniture and other items; here one can find great bargains

These are just a few simple things one can do to reduce costs.
