Making Money from Blogging

Making money from blogging is an achievable goal; it may not be a get-rich-quick scheme but making money from blogging is a long-term investment that can pay dividends. There are many ways to start a blog and there are many ways to make money from blogging; this article will share a few blogging insights.

Let’s start with the blog itself; you can purchase a domain name, find a web host and set up a blogging platform such as WordPress; or you can use blogger, or something similar. For the long-term blogger who wants to make a living from blogging, it is advisable to purchase a domain name and then look for a good web host. The best ones will have platforms such as WordPress included into the hosting plan. You can then just install WordPress into your root folder. The next stage is what to blog about. So many bloggers don’t even get started because they do not know what to blog about! Ironically, if they would just start writing, then they will discover many subjects to write about as they blog.

There are two ways to go, niche or general. The advice seems to be that a niche blog is better suited to making money from blogging, but this is not necessarily true. A general bog, covering many subjects can also earn money. You just need to have tight categories and tags that link posts together; you then end up forming mini blogs within your main blog.

To find a blogging niche can be very fun activity. Go out for a cup of coffee, sit down with a large blank writing pad and start listing! List hobbies, likes, dislikes, passions, aversion, everything! Draw a line across the page and mark the left as ‘birth’ and the right as ‘now’. Then, starting from the left, move your pen along the line and mark every past moment or event that occurs to you. You may end up with a thread of circumstances that can form a blogging niche. Take your time with these activities, it will form the foundation for your blogging career and can be used at any time, especially during moments of blogger’s writer’s block!

Ok, you have you blogging niche or you have decided to write a general blog. The next step is to start writing. At this point, forget about making money from blogging, just write and write some more. Your blogging style will start to develop and you will see whether your blogging niche is what you really want to blog about. You may change niches after a while or stumble upon a blogging niche you never thought of. This early blogging is vital, for it establishes a foundation of style and technique. This may sound silly, but please spell check before you hit ‘publish’!

Now for making money from blogging, there are many ways to achieve this. The simplest way to make money from blogging is with Google Adsense. This works well with a niche blog as highly relevant ads are placed on your blog posts according to the subject matter. This also works very well with general niches, as long as you write your blog post tightly around the subject matter. If you are careful with the blog post title and chosen keywords, then general blogs can pull in search engine traffic; this is where you can make good money from blogging. There are other similar pay-per-click programs available, and this is where you need to research further, however Google Adsense is quick and easy to implement.

The other side of making money from blogging is affiliate marketing. This really works well with a tight niche blog. From Amazon Affiliates to Clickbank, there are many affiliate-marketing programs available. Be careful though, as some products are of very little value and have poor reputations. Use the Web of Trust, or WOT, in your browser and make sure that your check every affiliate link before you add it to your blog. Any visitor sent to a site with a warning will not blame the site owner, but the site that sent them there. That means your blog will get the bad reputation.

Making money from blogging with affiliate marketing works fantastic with a niche blog tightly based on a blogging subject. For example, if your blog is all about photography, then you can have relevant affiliate ads based on your blog posts. Again, keep the subject matter tight and include ads that are highly relevant to the blog post. This will make it far more likely that a reader will click the advert. The only difference compared with pay-per-click is that you are paid when they make a purchase or fulfill the requirement when they get to the other site; with pay-per-click, you are paid when they click, no purchase necessary!

Other ways to make money from blogging would include being paid to right a review, or being paid as a guest blogger. Pay per post, means you are paid to write about a product. This can work, but you need to have a fairly established blog before advertisers will pay you to write for them. Remember, they want traffic to your blog; otherwise it is not worth it for them.

The biggest obstacle of all to making money from blogging is not blogging at all! The best advice is to start blogging from day one; you will then see your blogging style and technique emerge naturally. Blogging niches may naturally develop or you may need to spend some time researching within yourself, your own blogging subjects. Don’t let this time stop you from blogging, blog while you are researching and do not forget to spell check.
