To become published by a well-known poetry publishing company is a fine ambition; however, it is not the only way to get your poetry published. Poetry competitions are a great way to be noticed and to get your poetry published. This is especially true of the reputable and well-established poetry competitions. Unfortunately, there are quite a few poetry scams on the internet. They will entice with promises of being published but will ask for entrance fees and will also require you to buy a copy of the poetry anthology. This is not to say that all poetry competitions that ask for an entrance fee are scams, in fact many legitimate ones do ask; just beware if the poetry competition from a less known source. A good tip is to put the competition into Google and watch out for any results that link the competition with a poetry scam.

If you have the resources, then you can approach a local printer and publish a poetry pamphlet. These can be stocked in local bookshops, assuming they agree, and this can lead to your poetry being recognized. There are self-publishing firms available that, for a fee, will publish your poetry. As with the competitions, make sure that the company is legitimate by conducting thorough research. There is no shame in self-publishing your poetry, and many poets have started in this way.

Another way to get poetry published is through poetry journals. There are many available so it is best to become acquainted with the poetry style of as many as you can. There is no point in submitting your poetry to a journal that has a completely different style.

There are many writers’ magazines that also have poetry sections. You can submit your poetry here to gain exposure. These magazines will also have advertising in the back relating to poetry publications and how to get poetry published. Remember, these are adverts and not recommendations so conduct your research first.

The obvious step to getting your poetry published is to send your poetry manuscripts to poetry publishers. This is only advisable after you have built up a fair body of work and have had some poetry published in journals or magazines.

Above all, never get discouraged. Getting your poetry published can be a long journey and yet there is more than one way to go about it. Never become disheartened, know that rejection is part of the process and never stop writing poetry.
