Developing Writing Diversity

As a writer, finding your niche is a key moment in your writing career, for a writing niche makes you focused and helps to develop your own unique style of writing. However, diversity in your writing is a valuable skill, for it develops creativity and expansion and can also reveal niches that one had not considered. Diversity in writing may also be necessary if you need to look further afield for paid writing assignments and you have little choice over the subject matter.

Depending upon how and why you write, writing diversity can be a valuable asset to any writer’s toolkit. This is perhaps especially true if you are a freelance writer and you need to write about almost anything to land a job! The real test is when one has to write a piece about a subject that you know nothing about. This would involve research and being able to collate all that research into an informative and readable article or paper. Not only does this enhance your research and writing skills it also adds to your own personal body of knowledge.

Writing diversity can be practiced in interesting ways. One can use Google labs for search and find out what the trending topics are at the moment. This is especially good if you have a blog and you are a little stuck for ideas. Pick a hot topic and write about it. Again, depending on your writing format, the article does not need to be that long. In fact over 400 words and the reader’s interest starts to dip. This is another great skill to learn, to keep your article succinct, informative and interesting; this will require a little practice, especially with an unfamiliar subject.

Obviously, writing diversity has the possibility of watering down your focus and with too diverse a portfolio one can lose sight of goals; especially if you start to develop many blogs on different subjects. Having too many plates spinning at once can cause problems and can negatively affect your writing style. However, while you are looking for assignments or you want to find out exactly what your writing niche is then diversity can be useful.

We often think we know what we like and what we are good at and unless we step out of the writing comfort zone, we may never discover completely new aspects of our writing self. This is where diversity in writing can really help.
