A career in animal care seems like the dream job to many people, and for many this is true. However, a career in animal care needs careful consideration before embarking upon this route. There are a few key points one must take into consideration with a job working with animals; one must be flexible in approach and dedicated in purpose.
Firstly, the pay can be terrible in comparison to the hours that the animal carer puts into the job. Obviously, if you are considering a career in animal care then money is probably not on the top of your list. However, it is something that needs to be considered.
Secondly, there is a lot of competition due to the popularity of a career in animal care. To combat this, it is important that you can show some prior dedication to this field. This may involve volunteering, after school activities and so on. If you know of an animal care charity shop in your area then give them some of your time. It may not be glamorous but that is exactly how this author found paid employment working directly with animals.
Thirdly, working in animal care can be very traumatic. Depending upon the field that you go into, you may encounter animal cruelty or animal suffering and you must be prepared for that. This author used to take volunteers to see the inner working of animal rescue and they were shocked to see what actually goes on behind the scene in animal care; so be prepared.
If you know beforehand what to expect then you can at least be on your guard in an emotional sense.
Fourthly, do not have too tight a focus on the exact job itself. When I started working in animal care, I had no idea of the variety of employment opportunities. Animal care is such a huge field, that one need to research fully to make sure that the type of animal care you want to be involved with is the right one. This is also to encourage you if you cannot find exactly what you want; there are many other animal care opportunities available.
Working in animal care is hard work, long hours and can be very disheartening at times. On the other hand, animal care is exciting, rewarding and may not seem like work at all. If you carry out your research and stay positive and keep the above animal care points in mind, then you will be prepared for your future career working with animals.
